In today’s music industry it is a rare discovery to find an artist who truly epitomizes the word “music,” but in singer-songwriter-producer Lendon James, that’s exactly what you’ll find. Len “Lendon James” Fairley II, born and raised in North Carolina to very Godly and supportive parents, is a shining new star that’s changing the music industry standard of what an artist and musician should be.
Lendon James’ road to music and performing began at a very early age. He has memories (at age three) of standing on top of the furniture with any available “microphone” in hand, singing at the top of his lungs. He also started to play the drums at this tender age. His early musical aptitude is not surprising when one considers the musical backgrounds of both his parents: his mother, Brenda Fairley-Ferebee, was the director of the choir, Sunday school teacher, minister and vocalist in a family gospel group, while his father, Len Fairley, was an avid music lover whose love and knowledge for music ranged from classical to jazz, blues, R&B/Soul and other genres.
During his grade school years, he and his cousins formed a group that performed in a local talent show. After winning, he became overwhelmed by the idea of taking over an audience with music and went on to win more talent shows with the group. James acknowledged the fact that he was unpolished and wanted to better himself so he begin to work with his uncle Donald “Quack! Quack!” Davis, who was an established and successful musician, songwriter, producer and vocalist in the gospel industry. Davis allowed James the opportunity to learn from real producers of many genres and learn necessary techniques to good recordings, all the while working with his then R&B group First Impression. First Impression would have a couple regional hits with Love 101, Misunderstanding and A Mother’s Song.
After high school, James would pursue and obtain a B.A. in Communication Studies from Elizabeth City State University (ECSU). Over the years, James has had the pleasure of appearing as an opening act and host for numerous concerts and other events. His unorthodox talents have placed him in, on and around some of the country’s leading stages, bars, clubs and universities with some of the world’s leading artist and entertainers. He has performed on the same stage and bill with such artist as Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Rick Ross, Jim Jones, T.I., Jadakiss, Monica Brown, 2 Chainz, Juelz Santana, Kelly Price, Travis Porter, Soulja Boy and Tank to name a few.
James’ musical influences include Michael Jackson, David Ruffin, Prince, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding Jr., Marvin Gaye, Joe (Thomas), Carl Thomas, Brandy, Johnathan “JB” Baker, John Legend, Jackie Wilson; as well as Gospel artist such as Doc McKenzie, Tonex, J Moss, David N. Patterson (D.N.P.), Donald “Quack Quack” Davis and many more. He credits his style to studying these music icons (among others) to create his own unique and personal sound and style.
Lendon James is a true artist, singer, songwriter, producer, musician, performer and entertainer who takes pride in playing instruments and writing his own material while perfecting his smooth, yet powerful vocal arrangements. Lendon James is a shining new star that’s changing the music industry’s standards of what an artist-musician-performer should be.
In the song, “I’ve got my music,” from Marvin Gaye’s 1989 double-album, Midnight Love and the Sexual Healing Sessions, Gaye sings,”…music is the SOUL of a man.” And with those words, the life sequence of Lendon James was initiated.
“I like to think of my music as a total body experience; music for the heart, mind, body, soul and spirit. My vision is to create music that serves as the soundtrack of life, love and relationships…the pursuit of happiness!”
